Living Room Design Ideas from Real Indian Homes

The living room carries more of Indian life than any other room. It hosts, it holds festivals, it absorbs the everyday. The rooms gathered here range from restrained Japandi apartments in Pune to full-voiced maximalist homes in Mumbai, each one photographed as it was designed and lived in. Look closely at what repeats: seating that faces conversation rather than television, the one wall allowed to speak, light managed like a material.

What we keep seeing

  • Seating is turning toward conversation. Sofas curve, chairs angle inward, and the television recedes into panelling instead of commanding the room.
  • One wall is allowed to speak: book-matched stone, fluted timber or a single saturated colour, while the rest of the room stays quiet around it.
  • Arches and curves are softening straight-lined apartments, in doorways, niches and the furniture itself.

Questions

What living room styles lead in Indian homes right now?

Contemporary and minimalist rooms are the base layer across these homes, but the strongest current is contemporary Indian: craft detail, cane and brass, and handloom textiles carried on calm neutral rooms.

How are designers handling the TV wall?

The recurring move is to stop treating it as a feature. Televisions sit inside fluted or panelled storage walls in the same material as the room, so the architecture speaks and the screen does not.

What makes a small living room feel generous?

The compact rooms here rely on low-slung furniture, a single large rug that unifies the floor, and curtains hung ceiling to floor. The clutter lives inside panelling, not on display.

Many of these rooms belong to homes we've told in full. Start with the stories →
