Dining Room Design Ideas from Real Indian Homes

Indian dining rooms are working rooms: daily meals, homework, the long Sunday lunch. The tables here are anchored by stone, brass, cane and terrazzo, set in apartments and villas across the country. Notice how often the dining space borrows from the rooms around it, and how designers mark its edges with a rug, an arc of tile, a dropped pendant.

What we keep seeing

  • The table anchors everything: a slab of stone or a length of solid timber, with the rest of the room kept deliberately spare around it.
  • A dropped pendant or a cluster of them has become the standard way to mark the dining zone inside open-plan homes.
  • Crockery storage is moving into full-height wall units with reeded glass, display above and closed storage below.

Questions

What dining table materials are Indian designers choosing?

Stone tops lead across these homes, marble especially, followed by solid timber. Cane and upholstered chairs soften them, and brass details recur in legs, pendants and hardware.

How do open-plan homes define the dining area?

Three markers repeat across these photographs: a pendant hung low over the table, a rug or a change in flooring underfoot, and occasionally a slatted or arched partition that suggests a room without building one.

What works for small dining spaces?

Round tables, bench seating against a wall, and mirrors placed to double the light. Several homes here seat six in the footprint of a corridor.

Many of these rooms belong to homes we've told in full. Start with the stories →
