The word Sukoon carries a meaning that English struggles to capture. More than simply the absence of noise or chaos, it speaks of a quiet sense of belonging, comfort and ease. For a three-bedroom apartment in Hiranandani Estate, Powai, Mumbai, this sentiment became the foundation of a home where every material, texture and detail was thoughtfully considered to evoke a sense of calm.
Designed by Interiors by Kajal, under the direction of principal designer Kajal Tyagi, Sukoon was envisioned for a young family seeking something beyond the familiarity of conventional builder-finished interiors. Their brief was simple yet deeply personal: a home that felt welcoming, lived-in and effortlessly comforting. The studio translated this vision through a restrained palette of soft hues, natural materials and handcrafted details, creating interiors that balance understated elegance with the warmth of everyday living.

The entrance sets the tone before one steps inside. A mint-green four-panel door, introduces a thoughtfully composed entryway featuring a wall-mounted lantern, a slender black metal frame displaying the family name, and a ribbed cabinet-bench that combines seating with concealed shoe storage. Finished in the same muted green, these elements establish a cohesive visual language, where soft colour, subtle textures and functional detailing create a welcoming first impression. The restrained material palette lends the space a sense of lightness, offering a gentle introduction to the interiors beyond.

Just beyond the entrance, a slender black console with classically profiled legs creates a striking contrast against sculptural curved wall panelling, a design detail that reappears throughout the home. Minimal yet expressive, the arrangement reflects the home’s approach to design, where carefully selected objects and architectural details lend character without overwhelming the space.

The living room is anchored by a deep green bouclé sofa, its softly rounded silhouette bringing warmth and comfort to the space. Behind it, sculptural wall panelling with interlocking curved forms in soft cream introduces depth and architectural interest, complemented by a slender brass wall sconce. Cane-backed wooden armchairs and an oval, white-topped coffee table complete the seating arrangement, while a layered rug with subtle green accents ties the composition together. The interplay of tactile upholstery, natural textures and fluid forms creates a setting that feels both inviting and thoughtfully composed.

Viewed from another angle, the living room reveals a thoughtful balance of natural light, architectural detailing and spatial arrangement. Sheer drapery filters daylight into the space, while the curved wall panelling establishes a gentle visual rhythm.
““Sukoon expresses understated luxury through soft colours, natural materials, considered proportions and carefully curated details, demonstrating how thoughtful design can create a lasting sense of comfort without unnecessary embellishment.””

A white-framed grid partition with bronze-tinted mirror panels subtly separates the main living area from an intimate seating nook, reflecting natural light while maintaining a sense of spatial definition. Beyond, cane-and-wood armchairs upholstered in floral fabric introduce a more traditional design language, complemented by a slender console with classically profiled legs. The arrangement creates a visual connection between the adjoining spaces while allowing each to retain its distinct character.
The seating nook draws on classical influences, bringing together carved wooden armchairs with cane detailing, botanical upholstery and a pedestal side table. An arched tropical mural framed by decorative wall mouldings and wainscoting forms the focal point, lending depth and a garden-inspired character to the setting.

The kitchen combines practical functionality with a clean, understated aesthetic. Glossy cream cabinetry extends from floor to ceiling in an L-shaped configuration, paired with a stone-toned countertop and subtle dark edging for definition. A compact open niche in warm wood introduces a contrasting material accent, breaking the uniformity of the cabinetry. The result is an efficient, thoughtfully organised space that maintains the home’s cohesive design language.

The second bedroom brings together soft colour contrasts and integrated functionality through a thoughtfully designed wall composition. Sage-green overhead cabinetry is paired with a warm yellow display niche, while a deep green upholstered headboard adds richness and comfort to the palette. By combining storage, display and sleeping elements within a cohesive arrangement, the design maximises space without compromising visual balance.

On the opposite side, a compact study corner integrates a glass-topped sage-green desk, a floating shelf and a glass-fronted display cabinet with a softly arched profile. A green velvet chair complements the room’s cohesive colour palette, while the streamlined arrangement creates a dedicated work-from-home space without compromising the bedroom’s functionality or visual harmony.

The primary bedroom embraces a softer, more romantic design language, with delicate botanical wallpaper forming a backdrop to a gently curved cane headboard framed in muted blue. Brass wall sconces with frosted glass globes introduce a refined decorative accent, while light-blue bedside tables complement the room’s subtle colour palette. The interplay of floral patterns, natural textures and classic detailing creates a restful, inviting atmosphere with a timeless charm.

A closer view highlights the headboard’s gently curved silhouette, complemented by a two-drawer bedside cabinet with cane-fronted detailing in soft powder blue. The combination of blush tones, natural cane textures and subtle brass accents creates a cohesive composition, where carefully considered proportions and delicate finishes reinforce the bedroom’s understated elegance.

Opposite the bed, a full-height wardrobe in muted blue extends along the wall, featuring four doors with woven cane inserts and slender brass handles. A low console beneath the television continues the same material palette and detailing, creating a seamless visual connection between storage and display.

The media wall completes the bedroom’s cohesive design language, featuring a slender blue floating console with a cane-fronted drawer beneath the television. Alongside, a tall cabinet with geometric lattice detailing on its upper doors introduces a subtle reference to traditional jali craftsmanship. These carefully integrated elements bring together functionality and artisanal character, reflecting the home’s emphasis on handcrafted details and understated elegance.

The third bedroom adopts a classic design language defined by subtle detailing and a warm, neutral palette. A tall, button-tufted headboard upholstered in ivory bouclé, accented with brass detailing, forms the focal point against a backdrop of decorative white wall mouldings with delicate floral motifs at the corners. Sheer drapery softens the setting, while the adjoining panelled wardrobe continues the room’s refined architectural character, creating an atmosphere of understated luxury and timeless elegance.

The wardrobe introduces a distinctive decorative detail, with four full-height panelled doors in soft white, accented by delicate four-pointed brass star inlays where the doors meet. The subtle metallic accents add visual interest to the otherwise restrained composition, demonstrating how thoughtful craftsmanship and understated ornamentation can lend character without overwhelming the room’s refined aesthetic.

Amid Mumbai’s fast-paced urban landscape, Sukoon offers a thoughtful interpretation of residential comfort, where understated luxury is expressed through warmth, craftsmanship and carefully considered details. Rather than relying on elaborate statements, the design celebrates the interplay of soft colours, natural materials and classical influences, creating interiors that feel both refined and deeply personal.
What makes Sukoon distinctive is its ability to balance elegance with everyday ease. Cane, wood, bouclé and muted finishes come together in a cohesive yet layered composition, bringing character to each space without compromising the home’s sense of calm. Through a thoughtful approach to materials, proportions and detailing, Interiors by Kajal has translated the essence of Sukoon into a home that feels welcoming, timeless and effortlessly lived-in.
