The Soul Affair: A Mumbai Home Where Indian Maximalism Speaks in Full Voice

AttirailMumbai2,200 sq ft2026

In contemporary Indian interiors, restraint has become a familiar language, a palette of muted neutrals and quiet minimalism that signals sophistication through absence. The Soul Affair proposes an alternative. Here, colour is not an accent but a conviction, embraced with the confidence of a home that understands exactly what it wants to express.

Designed by Attirail, led by Purva Agrawal, this 2,200 square foot Mumbai residence was conceived for a couple in their sixties whose children now live abroad. Their brief was both specific and refreshing: a home rooted in the vibrancy of Indian living, where deep blues, vivid reds, parrot greens, and rich mustards coexist with buti prints, embroidered wallpapers, and a carefully collected mix of objects and artworks.

Rather than tempering these elements, the design celebrates them, creating interiors that feel layered, personal, and deeply lived in. The result is a home that balances warmth with exuberance, designed for everyday comfort while remaining generous enough to accommodate the energy and togetherness of family gatherings when the children return home.

The foyer establishes the character of the home from the moment one enters. A green painted slatted ceiling draws the eye toward a bespoke run of cabinetry, hand embroidered with motifs of elephants, trees, birds, and a meandering stream. Rich in detail and craftsmanship, the installation invites a closer look, transforming a functional storage element into a work of art. Set against this expressive backdrop, the panelled wooden entrance door remains deliberately understated, allowing the intricate embroidery to become the focal point of the arrival experience.

The living room balances vibrancy with a strong sense of order. A slatted swing sits alongside a deep blue sofa layered with velvet, embroidered, and block printed cushions, creating a setting that feels both inviting and richly textured. The walls are articulated with moulded panels edged in soft pink, framing floral motifs that introduce pattern and colour in a structured, intentional manner.

What lends the space its visual clarity is the careful use of framing and proportion. The mouldings organise the decorative elements into a cohesive composition, allowing the patterns to feel curated rather than overwhelming. Beyond, a doorway opening into a green drenched passage creates a striking visual connection, transforming colour into an architectural device that guides movement and enhances the home’s layered spatial experience.

A closer look at the seating reveals the studio’s nuanced approach to layering. Rust toned velvet, blush embroidered textiles, and buti printed green cushions come together on a single sofa with remarkable harmony. Rather than competing for attention, these varied textures and patterns are unified through a carefully balanced palette, anchored by the dusty pink drapery and the floral motifs that frame the panelled walls. The result is a composition that feels rich and expressive while remaining visually cohesive.

“The clients gravitated towards a vibrant, primary Indian colour palette, something that was also a first for us as a studio.”

The study and television room offers a more contemplative expression of the home’s vibrant design language. Limewashed blue walls envelop the space in a soft, atmospheric backdrop, creating a sense of calm that contrasts beautifully with the mustard daybed positioned at its centre. The interplay of colour feels deliberate and balanced, bringing warmth and character without overwhelming the room.

Above the seating, a framed pichwai inspired artwork depicting grazing animals serves as a focal point, flanked by wall lights that lend symmetry and refinement to the composition. Layered cushions in shades of pink, green, and dusty blue add depth and comfort, their arrangement carefully curated to appear effortless. Together, these elements create a space that feels intimate, expressive, and thoughtfully composed.

The dining room is where the home’s expressive character comes into full view. Six upholstered chairs in a muted red hue gather around a sculptural dark wood pedestal table, creating a setting that feels both inviting and dramatic. Along one wall, a deep blue sideboard anchors the composition, introducing depth and visual weight while providing a striking contrast to the surrounding palette.

A vibrant artwork by The Gondwana Project becomes the focal point of the space, its richly patterned animal motifs set against a vivid green backdrop. Framed within a rust pink scalloped moulding, the piece is given a layered presence that transforms the wall into an architectural feature in its own right. Overhead, clusters of ribbed pendant lights descend from the ceiling, thoughtfully scaled to the volume of the room, adding rhythm, texture, and a sense of visual balance to the dining experience.

The transition from the foyer to the dining area captures the essence of the home’s design narrative in a single view. The intricately embroidered cabinetry, adorned with motifs of trees, streams, birds, and lotus flowers, establishes a rich sense of craftsmanship at the entrance. As the space unfolds, the polished stone flooring leads the eye toward the dining room, where muted red chairs and deep blue cabinetry create a layered composition that draws one further into the home.

This carefully orchestrated progression highlights the studio’s ability to balance colour, pattern, and materiality while maintaining a strong sense of spatial continuity. Each zone retains its individual character, yet feels seamlessly connected to the larger story of the residence.

The master bedroom embraces a rich palette of teal blue and dusty pink, creating a space that feels both intimate and sophisticated. A channel tufted blue headboard anchors the room against a backdrop of pink buti printed wallpaper, applied up to dado height and finished with a wooden trim. This thoughtful detailing lends the pattern a sense of structure and refinement, allowing the decorative elements to feel balanced and composed.

A large photographic artwork depicting an Indian corridor introduces depth and perspective, drawing the eye beyond the room’s immediate boundaries. On either side of the bed, black and gold table lamps with pleated cream shades add a layer of warmth and elegance. Soft blush toned textiles further temper the bold palette, ensuring the room remains restful and inviting while retaining its distinctive visual character.

A patterned ottoman in shades of pink and blue sits at the foot of the bed, echoing the palette established throughout the space. Along the wallpapered wall, a compact upholstered chair with subtle blue detailing is paired with a marble topped side table resting on a sculptural brass and black base, introducing another layer of texture and material contrast.

Slim wooden battens extending from floor to ceiling rhythmically divide the walls, bringing structure to the patterned dado below and lending the space a sense of architectural order. These thoughtful interventions ensure that the room’s rich palette and decorative elements remain cohesive, balanced, and elegantly composed.

The master dressing area is the home’s exhale. Walls in a pale dusty pink hold a single ornate carved mirror above a wooden vanity, the drawer fronts faced in a striped indigo textile that ties back to the broader palette without repeating it.

The parents' bedroom: olive-green grasscloth walls and a pink floral headboard, a softer register of the home's maximalism

The parents’ bedroom adopts a softer and more understated expression of the home’s vibrant design language. An olive green grasscloth wall forms a textured backdrop for a single artwork depicting a woman in a yellow saree, introducing a quiet focal point to the space. Below, a floral upholstered headboard in shades of pink and green subtly echoes the colours within the artwork, creating a sense of continuity and warmth.

Caned wooden bedside tables topped with white surfaces bring lightness to the composition, while carefully selected accessories add layers of colour and character. The result is a space that feels calm and refined, demonstrating how richness in colour and pattern can be expressed with restraint while retaining warmth, personality, and depth.

A wardrobe in pale cream with caned inset panels sits to one side of the bed, large enough to do its work but quiet enough to recede behind the green wall.

The guest bedroom introduces a distinct character while remaining connected to the home’s overarching design narrative. A deep blue channel tufted headboard anchors the space against a mural inspired wallpaper depicting a pastoral landscape of peacocks, flowering foliage, and sculpted topiary trees. Rich in detail and visual depth, the wallpaper transforms the wall into an immersive backdrop that lends the room a sense of charm and escapism.

Across its many spaces, The Soul Affair presents a nuanced interpretation of contemporary Indian maximalism. Rather than relying on a singular design language, each room is shaped by its own distinct palette and atmosphere, from the rich reds of the dining area and the limewashed blues of the study to the textured greens of the parents’ bedroom and the softer tones of the guest suite. Despite these shifts in colour and mood, the home remains remarkably cohesive, united by a consistent attention to detail, craftsmanship, and thoughtful layering.

What makes the residence successful is not the abundance of colour, pattern, or ornamentation, but the clarity with which these elements have been employed. Every wallpaper, textile, artwork, and furnishing has been selected with purpose, creating interiors that feel curated rather than crowded. The home is a confident celebration of individuality, demonstrating that maximalism, when guided by restraint and intent, can feel both sophisticated and deeply personal.
